Planning Permission

In most instances, you will not require planning permission for a pergola because they are not considered permanent structures and as such do not fall under any planning regulations

We would advise speaking to your local planning authority before purchasing to double-check, especially if you relate to any of the following:

  1. You live in a conservation area
  2. You live in a listed area
  3. The pergola is for the front or the side of the property
  4. The pergola is placed within 2m of the property boundary
  5. The pergola exceeds the maximum height permitted of 2.5m

Installing a pergola on decking raises the height of the structure. Therefore it would be good practice to speak to the local planning authority to check you are within the height requirements and permitted development regulations

Finally, it would be courteous if you spoke with any closeby neighbours and enquire if a pergola would obscure their sight lines.

Siting Your Pergola

Siting your pergola diagram

Minimum Requirement

Our recommendation is a 400m 3 concrete block foundation [also called a concrete pad or concrete footing] beneath each of the leg posts. Ensuring the blocks are individually flat and level to each other is paramount as inconsistency will affect the end result

Concrete Slabs diagram

Concrete Slabs

If the slabs are level and soundly laid then fixing directly into them is acceptable. If the slabs are not sufficiently rigid then you should install the minimum requirement blocks of 400m 3

Timber or Composite Decking

If timber decking is flat, solid and in good condition then fixing directly into it is acceptable. If the decking is not adequate install the minimum blocks of 400m 3

Composite decking is not as solid as natural wood and therefore fixing directly into modern composite boards is not recommended. However, boards secured to substancial timber joists at each corner of the pergola is an acceptable solution

 Turf or Soil diagram

Turf, Soil or Loose Stone

Pergola legs cannot be fixed to any of the above. Therefore you must install the minimum requirement blocks of 400m 3
